We need to stop characterizing mistakes as flaws of character
Particularly obvious to me in teaching is that we need to stop characterizing mistakes as flaws of character.
I love it when my students make mistakes because it reveals an area of study we can focus on together and gives me an opportunity to try reframing or using different approaches to help the student.
When mistakes are punished, though, we teach that you must hide mistakes, and being seen to make a mistake means you're worth less than if you had not erred.
Bad academic performance is fought against by bullying parents because they mistakenly believe that bad grades mean students are bad or stupid.
Many parents, of course, take it personally and, frustrated with their own helplessness, lash out at their children, or their children's teachers.
Good academic performance is treated like it's the singular identifier of virtue for students, even if some students that do great on tests are also selfish, entitled, cruel, or otherwise have serious character flaws in need of addressing.
As long as you do your best to work to improve after a mistake, the mistake has done its work and you can move on. This is true for academics as well as most other areas of accomplishment in life.
Doing one's best in the face of error is a critical skill in life. The virtue of being able to correct your mistakes, and learn from them, is greater than the virtue of never having made mistakes in the first place.
